Happy Heart Month

Heart month

Hello friends –

I have been thinking a lot about the sayings we associate with the heart.

My heart aches for you ~ Tugs at my heart ~ Makes my heart happy ~ Heart of Gold ~ Heavy on my heart ~ Heart is in the right place ~ Wear your heart on your sleeve ~ Know it in my heart ~ Young at heart ~ Pour your heart out ~ Bless your heart ~ A person after my own heart ~ Fills my heart with joy ~ the list goes on….

How do the emotions elicited from those sayings affect not only our heart health, but also our general health?

HEARTMATH Research Institute Center has been researching this very thing since 1993. These are just two of the questions they posed when starting their research:

Why do people experience the feeling or sensation of love and other positive emotional states in the area of the heart and what are the physiological ramifications of these emotions?

How do stress and different emotional states affect the autonomic nervous system, the hormonal and immune systems, the heart and brain?

Over the years the HEARTMATH Institute experimented with different psychological and physiology measures, but it was consistently the heart variability or heart rhythms that reflected the status of emotional states and stress.

  • Negative emotions lead to increased disorder of the hearts rhythm which in turn affects the nervous system which then affects organs of the body
  • Positive emotions create increased harmony and coherence in heart rhythms and improves balance in the nervous system which in affects organs of the body

As techniques were used to bring the heart rhythm back into balance, dramatic shifts were noted in perceptions, ability to reduce stress, and deal more effectively with difficult situations. It was noted that the heart was affecting and influencing how we perceive and respond to the world.

Research from HEARTMATH institute and others indicate that the heart is more than a pump. It is a highly complex, self organized information processing center with its own functional “brain”. It influences the cranial brain via the nervous system, hormonal system and other pathways. These influences significantly affect brain function and most of the body’s major organs and ultimately the quality of life we enjoy.

So how is YOUR heart? Nutritionally? Physically? Emotionally?
