A Little Self-Compassion

Hey friends-

Over the years, as I have worked in the health and wellness arena, I was always taught to “honor the client where they are at”. I am a resource and support for them as they travel their health journey. I can love, support, and cheer them on and yes, even cry with them at times, but ultimately it is THEIR journey.

I recently read an article titled “Utilizing Self-Compassion While Improving Wellness” by Trinity School of Natural Medicine. Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field of Self-Compassion, defines self compassion as: Treating yourself with the same kindness, care and understanding without judgment; just as you would with a friend who is suffering or in need.

Dr. Neff suggested that there are three elements to self- compassion:
❤️Self-Kindness vs Self-Judgment
❤️Common Humanity vs Isolation
❤️Mindfulness vs Over-Identification
These are 3 simple action steps to practicing the above elements:
❤️Provide yourself with a gentle comforting touch, such as placing your hands over your heart or holding your own hand. Talk to yourself as if you are talking to a friend: “I know this is difficult, but I am here for you.”
❤️Acknowledge that many people have gone through this same thing, and you are not alone and what you are going through is part of being human.
❤️Mindfully, become aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing them to exist without trying to ignore or suppress them, while also not becoming burdened or “over-identified” with them.

What would each of our journeys be like if we didn’t judge or criticize ourselves for inadequacies, or shortcomings but instead give ourselves a little bit of self-compassion.
We are part way through the month of February – That amazing month where we share our hearts and shower an extra dose of love on those around us.

Don’t forget to give YOURSELF an extra dose of that love!

Love Carrie
